We take pride in the role we play in building the infrastructure for the cities of the future – infrastructure that will be used for generations to come. This includes tunnels, roads, railways, buildings, bridges and drainage networks.
Our projects
Surex Surveyors works on large and small infrastructure projects across the globe.
Building tomorrow's cities
Recent work
Below you’ll find examples of our recent work.
Sydney Metro West
Sydney Metro West is a new underground rail line running from Sydney Central Business Districts (CBD) to Westmead.
Surex are supplying all underground survey services to deliver both the Eastern and Western Tunnel Packages of this mega project.
Eastern Tunnel Package includes:
- Twin 3.5km TBM tunnels under Sydney Harbour between the Bays Station at Rozelle and Hunter Street Station in the CBD.
- Excavation and lining of 12 cross passages between the TBM tunnels.
- Roadheader excavation and concrete lining of the station caverns, cross over caverns, turnback tunnels, access and services admits at the new Pyrmont and Hunter Street stations.
- Access shaft excavation at the new Pyrmont and Hunter Street.
Western Tunnel Package includes:
- Twin 9.0km TBM tunnels between Sydney Olympic Park Station and Westmead Station.
- Excavation and lining of 35 cross passages between the TBM tunnels.
- D-Wall construction and excavation of the services shaft at Rosehill
- Road header excavation and concrete lining of twin 750m spur tunnels and 150m entry/exit caverns from TBM tunnel to Clyde Maintenance Facility.
- Westmead Station Box excavation.
- Road header excavation and concrete lining of Station Cavern, cross over cavern and stub tunnels at Westmead Station.
Western Sydney Airport Metro
Western Sydney Airport Metro is set to become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the growing region.
Western Sydney Airport (SBT)
Surex Surveyors successfully delivered all surveying services for the tunnelling component of this city-shaping project, from St Marys through to the new station at Orchard Hills (4.5km) and again from Airport Business Park under the new airport through to Western Sydney Aerotropolis.
Western Sydney Airport (SSTOM)
Surex are currently supplying all the surveying required for the installation of the 35km new rail line.
Utilising up to 5 Amberg GRP1000 Rail Trolleys for the high precision alignment of rail, both pre and post pour of the track slab.
Works also include all survey for the turnouts, switches and cross overs and the construction of the Stabling Yard and Maintenance Facility.
North East Link Tunnels
North East Link Tunnels
The 6.5km North East Link tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen fix the missing link in Melbourne’s freeway network. They also take 15,000 trucks off local roads each day. Depending on the time of day, travel times can be reduced by up to 35 minutes.
Surex supply all survey services for the guidance of the two Tunnel Boring Machines tasked with excavating this mega project. Each TBM stands 15.6m high, stretches 90m long and weighs over 4000 tonne. The project also includes the excavation and lining of 48 cross passages.
The Rozelle Interchange (West Connex 3b)
The Rozelle Interchange (West Connex 3b) project connects the extended M4 and the new M5 to the Anzac Bridge and Victoria Road in Sydney. The underground motorway is excavated by up to 20 roadheaders and is the most complicated network of tunnels constructed anywhere in Australia.
Surex is currently providing all the surveying required for excavation of this ground-breaking mega project. This includes calculation of all the tunnel profiles and ground support, maintaining the roadheader and bolter guidance systems, monitoring and final lining.

Cross River Rail
Cross River Rail is a new 10.2 kilometre rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes 5.9 kilometres of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and CBD.
Surex has completed the project control and is currently engaged in providing all the tunnelling and rail survey requirements. This includes guiding the Tunnel Boring Machines, roadheader excavation for underground stations and tunnels, concrete lining, monitoring, rail installation and final fit out.

Sydney Metro Stage 1 & 2
West Rail Tunnel is Stage 1 of Sydney Metro. The project used four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to excavate and line twin 15.5-kilometre tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping. The project included the excavation and lining of five new Metro stations.
Sydney Metro Stage 2 consists of twin 15.5-kilometre tunnels from Chatswood to Marrickville, including a second harbour crossing. This will be excavated with five TBMs. The project will also see the creation of six new stations:
- Waterloo
- Central Station (new underground platforms)
- Pitt Street
- Martin Place
- Barangaroo
- Victoria Cross (North Sydney)
- Crows Nest
Surex provided all underground surveying services for the excavation and lining of the tunnels and stations for both stages. This included project control (with gyro measurements), segment mould checks for the lining of the tunnel (industrial measurement), guiding the TBMs, roadheader excavation, station excavation, concrete lining & monitoring.

Westgate Tunnel
Westgate tunnel consists of two 15.6m diameter tunnels under Yarraville, between the West Gate Freeway and the Maribyrnong River. The outbound tunnel will be 4 kilometres in length, while the inbound tunnel will be 2.8 kilometres.
Surex has been engaged to oversee the survey control and tunnelling works including maintaining the tunnel guidance systems.

WestConnex
WestConnex Stage 1B, is the construction of twin tunnels extending the M4 Motorway in tunnels between Homebush and Haberfield. The tunnels were primarily excavated with Roadheaders using VMT Tunnel Guidance Systems.
Surex undertook the Survey Control for the project as well as maintained tunnel guidance systems. Surex completed the tunnel excavation and support. The drainage and pavement works were also undertaken in the tunnel as well as services ‘fit-out’.

NorthConnex
NorthConnex is a nine-kilometre tunnel motorway, linking the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. When complete the project will offer the long-term capability of three lane travel in both directions.
Surex has a major role in support of tunnel works at NorthConnex completing all tunnel control, including Gyro surveys, as well as assist in tunnel excavation and maintaining tunnel guidance systems and support.

Bullimba Creek Sewer Stage 1 & 2
Bulimba Creek Sewer Upgrade Stage 2 has involved installing 4.25km of new sewer main, from Mansfield to Carindale. This included curved tunnel drives over 800m.
Bulimba Creek Stage 1 consisted of over 4.5 kilometres of sewer upgrade between Wishart and MacGregor for Queensland Urban Utilities.
Both projects used trenchless technology (pipe jacking) with both laser guidance and VMT SLS guidance systems used.
Surex was engaged for the project, with tasks including survey control, shaft works and monitoring. Surex also completed all tunnel related surveys.
